10th Annual Egg Scramble held on April 23

By Susan Simpson….
For the tenth year in a row, the City of Sunny Isles Beach hosted its unique Egg Scramble event. And we still hear the jokes, “Where is breakfast? I thought you were serving scrambled eggs.” Well as always we didn’t serve breakfast. Rather, at Mayor Edelcup’s announcement to “go”, children 12 and under “scrambled” through a sea of brightly colored beach balls to collect plastic, candy-filled eggs. Ten thousand eggs were found and shared by over 1,000 children.

Once all the eggs were gathered, the festivities continued with a special baseball field dedication to celebrate the naming of the field as the Chief Fred Maas Baseball Field. And then it was fun and games for everyone!

Mr. and Mrs. Spring Bunny made their way through the crowd and met with families to have their pictures taken. After School Program counselors assisted the children in making a special themed frame to put their prized pictures in along with other fun seasonal crafts. All the while faces were being painted, bounce houses were bouncing and rides were whirling, the Kiwanis Club raised money for their charities at their food truck along with KWC, Kids Working with Cities, a high school student volunteer organization to benefit Feeding South Florida, and the City’s Park Concessionaire, Toby’s sold their famous lemonade and other fair style delights.

Special musical entertainment was provided by Haylei Sorrentini who courageously performed on stage with her instructor Alicia O’hara to showcase another summer Specialty Camp, Musical Theater, even singing the Sound of Music’s “ Do-Re-Mi”a capella. Through this program during the school year, Haylei has learned to project her voice and acquired a very confident stage presence that was evident in this performance. This program is now being offered as a summer camp giving participants intensive daily instruction in musical and theatrical performance. Registration for these camps and others opened to non-residents on 4/23/11 and is filling up fast. Don’t miss your opportunity to join in the fun!

Exciting entertainment was provided by the City’s Circus Camp Performers. This performance showcased the Cultural and Human Services Department’s summer camp program that has a new addition this year with the specialty camp, The Pelican Circus Camp. These performers dazzled guests with daring trapeze stunts, dueling jugglers, graceful aerial acts, and some notso- simple balancing acrobats! The show and the day came to a close with everyone joining in on the Conga Line.
