School bonds and Pets’ Trust get endorsement of KFPAC

The Miami-Dade Public Schools bond issue and establishing a Pets’ Trust to reduce the county’s stray animal population have been endorsed by the Kendall Federation Political Action Committee (KFPAC) on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Backing from KFPAC for the $1.2 billion school bond issue was anticipated following a personal appearance by schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who then said he would stake his job on getting voter backing countywide.

The Pets’ Trust initiative to establish low-cost veterinarian services as well as new adoption sources originally was the idea of Kendall Federation of Homeowner Associations (KFHA) president Michael Rosenberg. The straw ballot vote is nonbinding and, if approved, requires further county commission action.

The newest KFPAC endorsements support nine of the 10 Miami-Dade County issues including charter amendments, rejecting only the change that would give the county commission chair authority to act over the mayor in contracts declared conflicts of interest. It also supports a question on improvements to Crandon Park Tennis Center and a non-binding straw ballot on Contracting with Companies Doing Business with State Sponsors of Terrorism.

The KFPAC rejects all 11 State Constitutional Amendments (Nos. 1-6. 8- 12, No. 7 was thrown out by the court), except Amendment 2 — Veterans Disabled Due to Combat Injury; Homestead Property Tax Discount.

The KFPAC supports “yes” votes on retention of Florida Supreme Court Justices R. Fred Lewis, Barbara J. Pariente and Peggy A. Quince. The KFPAC also re-endorsed Katherine Fernandez Rundle, unopposed in her bid for the State Attorney’s post in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit.

The third and final KFPAC endorsements of individual candidates will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 30, according to Marvin P. Stein, KFPAC chair, who said all endorsements released July 27 for the Aug. 14 primary will be reviewed before making its final choices known on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
