New School Year Launches New Technology Initiative Full implementation of iPads in the classroom

Students began using iPads in the classroom sporadically throughout the 2011-12 school year. In this picture, sixth grade students are using iPads during a Spanish class taught by veteran Belen Jesuit teacher Alicia Fariñas.

The first day of the 2012-13 school year for Belen Jesuit Preparatory School will be on Tuesday, August 21. Students will embark in a new era of teaching at Belen Jesuit with the implementation of a one‐to‐one program using the Apple iPad device and utilizing all digital textbooks.

“Our faculty has been receiving training on utilizing the iPad device to its fullest capabilities since December 2011,” said Carol Vila, Director of Technology. “We are excited to be among the first schools in Miami-Dade County to implement this new teaching method. We look forward to an exciting year of innovation and challenges.”

“We are looking forward to a wonderful academic year full of activities and advancement in learning,” said Jesuit Father Pedro Suárez, President of the school. “The daily use of iPads in the classroom will give our students the edge as they prepare for their future in college and beyond. Our faculty along with the students will learn from this technology and embrace creativity in education.”

Fifteen-hundred all male students in grades 6-12 make up the student body along with 120 teachers; 68% of which have a Master’s degree or higher.

The Jesuits founded Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in 1854 in Havana, Cuba. In 1961, Belen and all private schools were confiscated by the new political regime. The School was re-established in Miami that same year and has grown over the last five decades.
