On November 10, the Homestead City Council unanimously selected Mr. George Gretsas as Homestead’s new City Manager. Mr. Gretsas, former City Manager of the City of Fort Lauderdale and Executive Officer of the City of White Plains, New York, was the leading candidate on a short list of five candidates prepared by executive search consultant Colin Baenziger & Associates after a national search. More than eighty candidates competed for the position.
Mr. Gretsas considers himself to be a results-oriented City Manager with a record of improving large, complex organizations and communities. With more than eighteen years of experience, Mr. Gretsas has a strong record of accomplishment in financial management, organizational development, implementing quality of life initiatives, modernizing facilities and infrastructure, preparing and responding to natural disasters, and economic development.
In his six-year tenure as City Manager of Fort Lauderdale, Gretsas led the City out of a financial crisis, improved development standards, enhanced quality of life, modernized City infrastructure, implemented green initiatives, and overhauled the City’s emergency management operations. With 2,600 employees and a budget of more than $600 million, the City of Fort Lauderdale is considerably larger than the City of Homestead.
Vice Mayor Judy Waldman as Management Review Committee Chair was responsible for the City Manager recruitment process. Mrs. Waldman was responsible for the identification and selection of the recruitment consultant and managed the recruitment process until Gretsas was appointed by the Council.
Waldman believes a key component of the City of Homestead’s success is an experienced and successful City Manager to professionally implement the policies of the City Council. “After a national search conducted by a top-notch consultant, I know that we have selected the best possible City Manager for Homestead,” said Waldman.
