Many people think of writing for children and teens as “writing light.” It is not. The demands children make on books – the reading and re-reading – require care and excellence in creating the work. One of the greatest editors of children’s books, Ursula Nordstrom, said: “Only the best is good enough for our children.” This workshop aims at bringing out the best in each participant: finding their best stories and the right voice to tell it; creating characters kids can believe in – whether realistic of fantastical; understanding the different needs and abilities of children at various ages; satisfying and fueling young readers curiosity and passion for books; recognizing and respecting their young audience and learning how their work fits into the field of literature for young people.

“We are so happy to be able to continue to offer the public our free children’s programs and even to expand them this year”, exults Artistic Director and Founder Delma Iles, “and we are so happy to bring more of these programs to Miami Beach! Our goal is to touch as many children and families as possible, sharing the beauty and excitement of our art form with choreography created just for youngsters.
All performances are followed by a movement workshop for kids in the audience. Workshops activities are created around topics introduced in the performances. “The best way to understand and appreciate dance is by participating in it”, explains Iles. “Our young audiences grow from creating movement with the guidance of the dancers.” Workshops culminate in a mini-performance by the participating kids.

Area Stage Company is pleased to announce that we are producing the southeast regional premiere of a play with music called Dreams of Anne Frank by British dramatist Bernard Kops (book & lyrics) and David Burman (music). The play vividly brings Anne’s story to life in a poignant and highly charged drama. Using actors, movement and song, Bernard Kops re-imagines and explores Anne Frank’s hidden world in which she lived, fell in love and dreamed of freedom.
“In celebrating the spirit of optimism that shines through the thoughts and dreams of one extraordinary thirteen-year-old during the darkest of times, Bernard Kops has created a dramatic masterpiece” (Time Out).
