Have you ever started a morning with that heavy I-don’t-want-to-get-up kind of feeling and at some point you hear yourself saying, “I woke up on the wrong side of the bed and my bed is against a wall?” Don’t lie. You know at some point you have! That thought then sets a bumpy pace for the rest of the day.
Well, I am issuing a challenge to everyone (including myself). Let’s all make a conscious choice to be fully aware of the thoughts kicking around in our heads; to no longer allow potentially energy-killing thoughts such as the one above to cloud our thinking. Positive, positive, positive!!!
What inspired me to be more in-tune with the constant voice and chatter going on upstairs? Several events which have taken place within the past few weeks.
First – an emotionally painful and draining break-up with my boyfriend of 15 months. (So much for being able to exit the Highway to a Husband!) In the days following the split, I found myself being controlled by a series of negative thoughts – a cornucopia of “woe-is -me” feelings, which quite frankly sent me into a tailspin. My friends have provided wonderful support but quickly reached their limits of listening to my “dribbledrabble” of a failed romance.
Then, as I joined my friends for lunch one afternoon (yet still feeling down in the dumps) it occurred to me, I may be overlooking valuable, precious and enriching moments with my friends and colleagues because my brain and thoughts are somewhere else. How easy it is to slip into a pattern of dissecting the past, wondering about the future and overlooking “the now.”
A few days later I attended a friend’s wedding. Nothing like the joyous coming together of two people in love to renew one’s faith in relationships. Needless to say, being at such an event was somewhat of a challenge given my own current relationship status. But I reminded myself to stay in the moment. To not let any outside thoughts creep in. To simply enjoy the celebration, the guests, the friends and the happiness in the room. I knew if I let my mind wander – even for a split second – I might miss something; a word….a glance… a smile. Something that might have a long-lasting positive impact on my life.
I’m glad I stayed “present.” It lifted my spirits, I made new friends and am more determined than ever to stay ‘in the now’ and enjoy life’s moments as they unfold!
